Elegant Quail, Callipepla douglasii, is a New World quail that breeds in western Mexico. It is found on the Pacific slopes of the Sierra Madre Occidental, from southern Sonora and south-western Chihuahua to northern Jalisco, in thorn forest, scrub, deciduous woodland, open ground and cultivated fields. It is a common bird and is mainly seen on the ground. The male has a long, straight crest of golden-buff, while the female’s crest is grey. The sexes are otherwise much alike, with grey plumage marked by black, brown and white, and the male also showing reddish-brown.
