Eleonora's Falcon, Falco eleonorae, breeds in the Palearctic in southern Europe and northern Africa, and spends the non-breeding season in eastern Africa and Madagascar. It is a falcon in the family Falconidae, placed in the hobby group of closely related falcons. The bird is medium-sized. Its English and scientific names honour Eleanor of Arborea, the Sardinian ruler who gave legal protection to hawk and falcon nests in 1392. The genus name Falco comes from a Latin word for a sickle, a reference to the claws.
