Elf Owl

Micrathene whitneyi

The Elf Owl (Micrathene whitneyi) is the smallest owl in the world, measuring only about 5-6 inches in length. It has a grayish-brown plumage with white spots on its back and wings. This nocturnal bird is known for its high-pitched, whistled hoots that are often heard in the desert habitats of the southwestern United States and Mexico. Elf Owls are cavity nesters, often utilizing abandoned woodpecker holes or saguaro cacti for nesting. They primarily feed on insects, especially moths, beetles, and scorpions. Despite their small size, Elf Owls are skilled hunters and play an important role in controlling insect populations in their arid habitats.
