Emperor Goose

Gavia adamsii

The Emperor Goose (Gavia adamsii) is a striking waterfowl species known for its distinctive black and white plumage, with a bright orange bill and legs. These medium-sized geese are native to the coastal regions of Alaska and northeastern Siberia. They are often found in tundra and coastal habitats, particularly in areas with abundant eelgrass and other aquatic vegetation. Emperor Geese are known for their strong migratory instincts, traveling long distances between their breeding and wintering grounds. While their populations have faced some threats from hunting and habitat degradation, conservation efforts have helped stabilize their numbers. The Emperor Goose is currently classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN.
