Numenius borealis
The Eskimo curlew (Numenius borealis) is a small, migratory shorebird that was once abundant in North America but is now critically endangered. This species has a distinctive long, curved bill and a mottled brown plumage that provides excellent camouflage in its tundra and grassland habitats. Eskimo curlews are known for their long-distance migrations, traveling from their breeding grounds in the Arctic to their wintering grounds in South America. Due to habitat loss, hunting, and climate change, the population of Eskimo curlews has declined dramatically, and they are now considered one of the rarest bird species in the world.
