Ethiopian Swallow

Hirundo aethiopica

The Ethiopian Swallow (Hirundo aethiopica) is a small passerine bird native to Ethiopia and Eritrea. It is known for its distinctive long tail streamers and striking blue-black and white plumage. These agile birds are often seen darting through the air catching insects on the wing. They typically nest in colonies, constructing cup-shaped mud nests in rocky outcrops or under overhangs. The Ethiopian Swallow is a migratory species, spending the non-breeding season in southern Africa. Despite facing threats from habitat loss and agricultural intensification, the population of this species is currently considered stable.
