Eurasian Woodcock

Scolopax saturata

The Eurasian Woodcock is a medium-sized wader known for its cryptic plumage and distinctive long bill. It inhabits damp, dense woodlands, and is primarily nocturnal, foraging for earthworms and invertebrates in the leaf litter. During the breeding season, the male performs a unique aerial display known as 'roding' to attract females. This bird is known for its elusive nature, making it a challenging sight for birdwatchers. The Eurasian Woodcock is a migratory species, breeding in northern Europe and wintering in southern Europe and parts of Africa. Despite facing threats from habitat loss and hunting, its population is currently stable.
