Larus argentatus
The European Herring Gull, scientifically known as Larus argentatus, is a large, white-headed gull with a pale gray back and wings. It has a robust body, yellow bill with a red spot, and pink legs. This species is highly adaptable and can be found in a variety of coastal and inland habitats, including beaches, cliffs, and urban areas. European Herring Gulls are opportunistic feeders, consuming a wide range of food including fish, invertebrates, and scavenged human waste. They are known for their distinctive 'laughing' call and complex social behaviors, forming large colonies during the breeding season. Despite being widespread, the species faces threats from habitat loss, pollution, and disturbance at breeding sites.
