Familiar Chat Oenanthe familiaris is a resident breeder across western, central, eastern and southern Africa, where it occurs in rocky and mountainous places and close to people. It is a passerine in the Muscicapidae family. The bird is a compact, short-tailed species with dull brown upperparts, warmer brown ear coverts, pale underparts, a rufous rump and outer tail feathers, and dark brown central tail feathers. The bill, legs and feet are black. Males and females look the same, while young birds show buff spotting above and a scaly breast pattern.
