Fan-tailed Widowbird

Euplectes axillaris

The Fan-tailed Widowbird is a small passerine bird native to eastern and southern Africa. The male is known for its striking breeding plumage, which includes a long, black tail with a distinctive fan shape. During the breeding season, males perform acrobatic flight displays to attract females. This species is often found in grasslands, marshes, and agricultural areas, where it forages for seeds and insects. Outside of the breeding season, the male's plumage becomes less conspicuous. The Fan-tailed Widowbird is known for its gregarious behavior, often forming large flocks outside of the breeding season.
