Far Eastern Curlew

Numenius madagascariensis

The Far Eastern Curlew is a large shorebird with a long, down-curved bill, which it uses to probe deep into the mudflats for invertebrates. It has a distinctive, haunting call and is known for its impressive long-distance migrations, traveling from its breeding grounds in northeastern Asia to its wintering grounds in Australia and Southeast Asia. This species is facing threats from habitat loss and degradation of its stopover sites, as well as hunting pressure in some areas. Conservation efforts are underway to protect key habitats and raise awareness about the importance of preserving the Far Eastern Curlew's migratory routes.
