Ferruginous Hawk

Buteo regalis

The Ferruginous Hawk, scientifically known as Buteo regalis, is a large raptor found in western North America. This majestic bird is known for its striking appearance, with a predominantly rusty or rust-colored plumage on its upperparts and a contrasting white underbelly. With a wingspan of up to 4.5 feet, the Ferruginous Hawk is a formidable hunter, preying on small mammals and occasionally birds. This species is known for its impressive aerial displays during courtship and is a symbol of the vast open spaces of the American West.
