Fiji owlet-nightjar

Aegotheles insignis

The Fiji owlet-nightjar (Aegotheles insignis) is a small, nocturnal bird species endemic to the islands of Fiji. With a distinctive grey-brown plumage and large eyes, it is well-adapted for hunting insects under the cover of darkness. These birds are typically found in dense forests, where they roost in tree cavities during the day and emerge at dusk to forage for prey. The Fiji owlet-nightjar is known for its unique call, a series of soft, melodious whistles. Due to habitat loss and predation by invasive species, the conservation status of this species is currently listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
