Fine-spotted Woodpecker

Veniliornis dignus

The Fine-spotted Woodpecker (Veniliornis dignus) is a small woodpecker found in the subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests of South America. It is characterized by its distinctive fine black and white spotting on the plumage, with a red crown in males and a black crown in females. This species forages on tree trunks and branches for insects and larvae, using its strong bill to drill into the wood. It also drums on trees to communicate with other woodpeckers. The Fine-spotted Woodpecker is generally solitary or found in pairs, and it nests in tree cavities. Although not currently considered threatened, habitat loss and fragmentation are potential future threats to this species.
