This bird is confined to evergreen and mixed forests at high elevations, especially in coniferous woodland, where it is most often recorded above 2,000 m and up to 3,700 m. Its most striking feature is the orange-yellow crest on the head. The crown pattern differs between the sexes, with the female showing a yellow stripe and the male an orange-centred one.
