Dendropicos gabonensis (Verreaux, J & Verreaux, É, 1851)

Gabon Woodpecker, Dendropicos gabonensis, is a woodpecker of western and central Africa, breeding from southern Nigeria through the Congo Basin to northern Angola and western Uganda. It is a small bird with a short bill that is broad at the base. The upperparts are plain green and the tail is dark. The underparts are heavily spotted on a yellowish background. Males show a red hindcrown and nape, while females lack red on the head. Juveniles of both sexes have red on the centre of the crown.
