Mareca strepera
The Gadwall (Mareca strepera) is a medium-sized dabbling duck with a distinctive grey and brown mottled plumage. The male has a finely barred grey body, black rump, and a distinctive white speculum. The female is mottled brown with an orange-edged bill. Gadwalls are often found in shallow wetlands, marshes, and lakes, where they feed on aquatic plants, seeds, and small invertebrates. They are known for their quiet and unobtrusive behavior, often foraging at the water's edge. During the breeding season, they build nests in dense vegetation near water. The Gadwall is a widespread and common species, with stable populations and no major conservation concerns.
