Galapagos hawk

Buteo galapagoensis

The Galapagos hawk is a large raptor endemic to the Galapagos Islands. It has a dark brown plumage with a lighter head and neck, and its sharp, hooked beak and powerful talons make it a formidable predator. These hawks are often seen perched on rocks or low branches, scanning the ground for prey. They primarily feed on small vertebrates and sometimes scavenged carrion. Their population is vulnerable due to habitat loss and introduced species, but conservation efforts are in place to protect their unique island habitat.
