Galapagos penguin

Spheniscus mendiculus

The Galapagos penguin, scientifically known as Spheniscus mendiculus, is a species of penguin that is endemic to the Galapagos Islands. It is the only penguin species to be found north of the equator. These penguins have adapted to the warm climate of the Galapagos by nesting in cool, shaded areas and hunting for fish in the cold, nutrient-rich waters surrounding the islands. They are the smallest of the South American penguins and have distinctive black and white plumage with a black band across their chest. Galapagos penguins are social birds, often forming small colonies and breeding in burrows or crevices. Despite their unique adaptations, they are considered endangered due to threats such as climate change, fishing activities, and introduced predators.
