Giant Coot

Fulica gigantea

The Giant Coot, or Fulica gigantea, is a striking waterbird found in South America. It is known for its predominantly black plumage, with a distinctive white frontal shield and bill. This species is characterized by its large size and robust build, making it an impressive sight in its wetland habitats. Giant Coots are primarily herbivorous, feeding on aquatic plants and invertebrates. They are often observed swimming and foraging in shallow freshwater lakes and marshes. Despite their relatively widespread distribution, habitat loss and degradation pose significant threats to their populations.
