Gila woodpecker

Melanerpes uropygialis

The Gila woodpecker is a medium-sized bird found in the deserts of the southwestern United States and Mexico. It has a distinctive black and white barred back, a pale yellow belly, and a red cap on the head of males. This species is known for its strong, slightly curved bill used for drilling into cacti to create nesting cavities. Gila woodpeckers are adaptable and can be found in various desert habitats, including saguaro cactus forests, mesquite woodlands, and desert washes. They are often seen foraging for insects and nectar, and their characteristic calls can be heard echoing through the desert landscapes.
