Gilded Flicker

Colaptes chrysoides

The Gilded Flicker is a medium-sized woodpecker found in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. It has a distinctive appearance with a golden-yellow underparts and a black crescent on its chest. The upperparts are brown with black bars, and it has a gray face with a red malar stripe. Gilded Flickers are often found in saguaro cactus deserts, mesquite woodlands, and riparian areas. They primarily feed on insects, fruits, and seeds. This species is known for its drumming and loud calls, and it often nests in saguaro cacti. Gilded Flickers are not currently considered at risk, and their populations are stable.
