Golden-tailed Woodpecker
Campethera taeniolaema
The Golden-tailed Woodpecker (Campethera taeniolaema) is a medium-sized woodpecker found in the woodlands and savannas of sub-Saharan Africa. It has a distinctive golden-yellow tail and a black and white barred pattern on its back. This woodpecker is known for its drumming behavior, using its bill to create rhythmic patterns on trees to communicate with other woodpeckers. It forages for insects and larvae in dead wood and tree bark, using its strong bill to excavate and probe for food. The species is known for its territorial behavior, with males defending their nesting sites and foraging areas. Although not currently considered threatened, habitat loss and degradation are potential threats to its populations.
