Gray-breasted Woodpecker

Melanerpes hypopolius

The Gray-breasted Woodpecker (Melanerpes hypopolius) is a medium-sized woodpecker found in the montane forests of Mexico and Central America. It is known for its distinctive gray breast and black-and-white barred back. This species is often found foraging for insects and larvae on tree trunks and branches, using its strong bill to excavate its food. The Gray-breasted Woodpecker also drums on trees as part of its territorial and courtship behavior. Although not currently considered globally threatened, habitat loss and fragmentation are potential threats to its populations.
