Gray Vireo

Vireo magister

The Gray Vireo (Vireo magister) is a small songbird found in the arid regions of southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It has a grayish-olive back, whitish underparts, and distinct white spectacles around the eyes. This species is known for its melodious, warbling song, often heard during the breeding season. Gray Vireos primarily forage for insects and spiders in scrubby habitats, such as desert shrublands, chaparral, and open woodlands. They build cup-shaped nests in low bushes or small trees. The population of Gray Vireos is currently stable, but they face threats from habitat loss and nest parasitism by cowbirds.
