Great Antshrike, Taraba major, is a passerine of the antbird family that breeds from eastern Mexico through Middle America and across South America to northern Argentina. It was first described by Vieillot in 1816. This is a large, distinctive bird with a prominent crest, a red iris and a heavy hooked bill. The species shows marked differences between the sexes, and the adult male and female of the nominate form have very different plumage. It is the only member of Taraba, and its range includes Trinidad and much of mainland South America.
