Great Black Hawk, Buteogallus urubitinga, breeds from Mexico through Central America and on into northern Argentina, with its range extending across Middle America and South America. It is a member of the Accipitridae, the hawk family, and was first described by Gmelin in 1788. The bird has very broad wings and is mostly black. It can be told from the common black hawk by its larger build and its tail pattern. The tail is short, white, and marked by a wide black end. The bill is black, while the legs and cere are yellow.
