Great Firefinch

Melopyrrha grandis

The Great Firefinch (Melopyrrha grandis) is a small, colorful finch found in the grasslands and savannas of sub-Saharan Africa. This species is known for its vibrant plumage, with males displaying a striking combination of red, black, and white feathers, while females have a more subdued appearance. Great Firefinches are often found in small flocks and are known for their melodious, twittering calls. They primarily feed on grass seeds and insects, using their conical bills to crack open seeds and forage for small invertebrates. Despite being relatively common in its range, the Great Firefinch faces threats from habitat loss and trapping for the pet trade.
