Great Slaty Woodpecker

Anorrhinus galeritus

The Great Slaty Woodpecker (Anorrhinus galeritus) is the largest woodpecker species in the world, measuring around 47-58 cm in length. It is known for its distinctive loud, ringing calls and its preference for large trees in primary and tall secondary forests. This woodpecker has a dark plumage with a prominent red crest on the male, and a black crest on the female. It forages on a variety of insects and grubs by excavating large, rectangular holes in tree trunks. Due to habitat loss and fragmentation, the Great Slaty Woodpecker faces threats in some parts of its range.
