Great Sparrow, Passer motitensis, breeds in southern Africa across acacia savanna from coastal south-west Angola, Namibia, Botswana and south-west Zimbabwe to northern South Africa. It is a sparrow of the Old World sparrow family, and is also found in dry wooded savannah and towns. It is superficially similar to a large house sparrow. The bird has a grey crown and rear neck, with rufous upperparts. It was described by A. Smith in 1836.
