Great Spotted Kiwi, Apteryx maxima, is a kiwi of montane South Island, New Zealand, in Australasia. It belongs to the Apterygidae and the order Apterygiformes. Sclater, PL & Hochstetter described it in 1861. It is the largest kiwi. Also known as the great grey kiwi or roroa, it is flightless. Its breeding range is in the mountainous parts of the South Island. The species is endemic to that island, and most birds occur in northwest Nelson, the northwest coast and the Southern Alps, with some on island reserves.
