Great Stone-curlew

Esacus recurvirostris

The Great Stone-curlew, also known as the Great Thick-knee, is a large, distinctive shorebird found in coastal areas and inland riverbeds of South and Southeast Asia. With its long legs, large eyes, and cryptic plumage, this species is well-adapted to its sandy and rocky habitats. The Great Stone-curlew is primarily nocturnal, using its keen eyesight to forage for insects, small reptiles, and crustaceans under the cover of darkness. Despite its large size, this bird is a master of camouflage, blending seamlessly into its surroundings. The species is known for its haunting, far-carrying calls that echo across its coastal habitats.
