Greater Ani, Crotophaga major, is a cuckoo of Middle America and South America, breeding from Panama to northern Argentina. It belongs to the family Cuculidae and was described by Gmelin in 1788. Also known as the black cuckoo, it is a bird of tropical South America. It occurs in mangrove swamps, semi-open woodland near water, and along forest edges. The species is monotypic, with no recognised subspecies.
