Greater Double-collared Sunbird

Cinnyris afer

The Greater Double-collared Sunbird, scientifically known as Cinnyris afer, is a small, strikingly colored bird found in southern Africa. The male of this species is adorned with a glossy, metallic green plumage, a brilliant red chest band, and a shimmering purple collar, while the female is more subtly colored with a grayish-green upperparts and a yellowish belly. These sunbirds are known for their acrobatic flight and their ability to feed on nectar from a variety of flowers. They also consume insects and spiders for protein. The species is often found in gardens, fynbos, and forest edges, where it can easily access nectar sources. The Greater Double-collared Sunbird is not currently considered to be at risk and is classified as a species of Least Concern by the IUCN.
