Greater Flameback, Chrysocolaptes guttacristatus, is a woodpecker of the Palearctic and Oriental regions, breeding from south-east India and the Himalayas east to the Malay Peninsula and the Greater Sundas. It was described by Tickell in 1833. A member of the Picidae, it is a large bird with the classic woodpecker form, an upright crest and a long neck. Its plumage varies across subspecies, but the back and wings are always unmarked and golden-yellow to dark brown, with a red rump and a black tail. The adult male always shows a red crown.
