Butorides sundevalli
The Green-backed Heron, scientifically known as Butorides sundevalli, is a small heron found in sub-Saharan Africa. It is characterized by its greenish-black back, chestnut neck, and grey wings. This species is often found in wetlands, marshes, and mangroves, where it hunts for fish, insects, and amphibians with its sharp bill. The Green-backed Heron is known for its stealthy hunting behavior, often standing motionless for long periods before striking at its prey. It is a solitary bird, typically seen foraging alone along the water's edge. Although not currently classified as threatened, the conservation status of the Green-backed Heron is of least concern according to the IUCN Red List.
