Green-backed Rail

Thamnornis chloropetoides

The Green-backed Rail (Thamnornis chloropetoides) is a small, secretive bird found in the wetlands and marshes of South America. This species is characterized by its olive-green back, gray face, and chestnut belly. It has a long, slightly curved bill and short tail. Green-backed Rails are primarily crepuscular and nocturnal, foraging for invertebrates and small vertebrates in the dense vegetation of their habitat. They are known for their loud, repetitive calls during the breeding season. These rails are highly adapted to their wetland habitats, using their long toes to walk on floating vegetation. Despite their widespread distribution, they are often elusive and difficult to observe due to their secretive nature.
