Butorides virescens
The Green Heron is a small, stocky wading bird found in wetland habitats across North and Central America. It is known for its striking greenish-black cap and back, chestnut neck, and dagger-like bill. This species is a skilled hunter, often seen using its clever fishing technique of dropping bait or insects onto the water's surface to attract fish. Green Herons are solitary and secretive, often found perched motionless at the water's edge or hidden among dense vegetation. They are known for their distinctive call, a loud and abrupt 'skeow' sound. Despite their widespread distribution, habitat loss and degradation pose threats to their populations.
