Green Wood Hoopoe

Phoeniculus purpureus

The Green Wood Hoopoe, scientifically known as Phoeniculus purpureus, is a medium-sized bird found in the woodlands and savannas of sub-Saharan Africa. It has a distinctive green and black plumage, with a long, curved bill and a prominent crest. These social birds are known for their loud, cackling calls and their habit of foraging for insects and small reptiles by probing and gleaning from tree bark. They also form cooperative breeding groups, with multiple individuals helping to raise the young. The Green Wood Hoopoe plays a vital role in its ecosystem by controlling insect populations and dispersing seeds.
