Grey-headed albatross

Thalassarche chrysostoma

The grey-headed albatross (Thalassarche chrysostoma) is a large seabird known for its striking appearance and impressive flying skills. With a wingspan of up to 2.5 meters, it is a powerful and graceful glider, effortlessly riding the ocean winds for hours. This species is characterized by its pale grey head, white body, and black upperwings. Grey-headed albatrosses are highly adapted for life at sea, spending most of their lives soaring over the southern oceans. They are skilled fishers, using their keen eyesight to spot prey from great heights and diving into the water to catch squid and fish. Unfortunately, they face threats from longline fishing and climate change, leading to a vulnerable conservation status according to the IUCN Red List.
