It lives in rocky parts of closed-canopy rainforest, especially where streams and inselbergs occur, and its range is broken into separate pockets. The bird has a long neck and tail, grey upperparts, a pale grey breast and lemon-coloured underparts. Its head is almost bare, with blue skin on the forehead and upper bill, carmine on the rear of the crown, and a black facial patch around the eyes and cheeks.
