Groove-billed Ani

The Groove-billed Ani is a medium-sized, black bird with a distinctive curved bill and a long tail. It is known for its unique vocalizations, often described as a guttural 'kaow kaow' sound. This species is highly social and forms large, noisy groups, often seen foraging on the ground for insects and small vertebrates. Groove-billed Anis are found in a variety of open habitats, including grasslands, savannas, and agricultural areas, throughout Central and South America. They are known for their cooperative breeding behavior, with multiple individuals contributing to the care of young. While not currently considered globally threatened, habitat loss and fragmentation are potential threats to their populations.
