Guadalupe Murrelet

Synthliboramphus hypoleucus (Xántus, J, 1860)

Guadalupe Murrelet, Synthliboramphus hypoleucus, is an auk of the North Pacific coast of Middle America, breeding on Guadalupe and San Benito islands off western Baja California, Mexico, and ranging north to coastal northern California outside the breeding season. It was described by Xántus, J, 1860. The species was once treated as part of Xantus’s murrelet, but it is now recognised separately. Its separation from Scripps’s murrelet rests on evidence from nesting, facial pattern, bill shape, vocalisations and genetics.
