Guadeloupe Woodpecker, Melanerpes herminieri, is a woodpecker of the Lesser Antilles, confined to the Guadeloupe archipelago. It is found mainly in the islands’ tropical rainforest, and it has also adapted to more open woodland shaped by urban growth. A distinctive feature is its wholly black plumage with red to purple sheen on the belly. It shows no difference between the sexes. In the breeding season it is solitary, and it nests in cavities it chisels in dead tree trunks, especially coconut.
