Guam Kingfisher

Todiramphus cinnamominus (Swainson, 1821)

Alcedinidae — Kingfishers

Guam Kingfisher, Todiramphus cinnamominus, is a kingfisher of Guam in the Pacific Ocean, now extinct in the wild. It belongs to the family Alcedinidae and the order Coraciiformes. The bird is tied to a captive breeding programme after disappearing from its native habitat. It is also known in Chamorro as sihek. The species was described by Swainson in 1821. Its wild loss was linked mainly to the arrival of the brown tree snake, and it remains part of conservation efforts for possible future return to Guam.
