Gunnison Grouse

Centrocercus minimus Young, Braun, C, Oyler-McCance, Hupp & Quinn, 2000

Phasianidae — Pheasants & Allies

Gunnison Grouse Centrocercus minimus lives in southwestern Colorado and eastern Utah in North America. It is a grouse of sagebrush-dominated country and is closely related to the greater sage-grouse, but it is smaller and has thicker plumes behind the head. It was only recognised as a separate species in 2000 after being overlooked for years because of its similarity to that bird. Its breeding range is limited to seven counties in Colorado and one in Utah, with the Gunnison Basin holding the largest population.
