Halmahera Boobook

Ninox obscura

The Halmahera Boobook (Ninox obscura) is a small to medium-sized owl species native to the island of Halmahera in Indonesia. It is characterized by its dark brown plumage with mottled patterns, large yellow eyes, and a rounded head. These nocturnal birds are skilled hunters, preying on small mammals, insects, and other birds. They are known for their haunting calls that echo through the dense forests of Halmahera. The Halmahera Boobook is adapted to a variety of forested habitats, including primary and secondary forests, as well as plantations and gardens. Despite facing habitat loss and potential predation by invasive species, the conservation status of the Halmahera Boobook is currently classified as Least Concern by the IUCN.
