Hardhead

Aythya australis

The Hardhead (Aythya australis) is a medium-sized diving duck native to Australia and New Zealand. It is characterized by its distinctive pale blue bill and a dark brown head. The male has a black body with a white flanks and a bright yellow eye. The female is mottled brown with a darker brown head. Hardheads are commonly found in freshwater lakes, reservoirs, and lagoons, where they dive to feed on aquatic plants, seeds, and small invertebrates. They are often seen in small flocks and are known for their rapid and direct flight. The species is not currently considered threatened, with stable populations across its range.
