Hawaii Akepa, Loxops coccineus, is a finch of the Hawaiian Islands in Hawaii. It is native to the Pacific Ocean: Hawaii (Hawaiian Is.), where it belongs to the family Fringillidae. The bird was described by Gmelin in 1789. It is one of the ʻākepa species found in Hawaiʻi, and it was treated as a single form with the others until 2015, when the group was divided by the NACC of the AOU. It was first taken into western science on Captain James Cook’s third voyage, and later specimens were sent to England for study.
