Hawaiian Crow

Loxioides bailleui

The Hawaiian Crow, or Alalā, is a medium-sized bird native to the island of Hawaii. It has glossy black plumage, a strong bill, and a distinctive call. Historically, it inhabited a variety of forested habitats, including both lowland and montane forests. Unfortunately, the species is critically endangered, with only a few individuals remaining in the wild. Efforts are underway to reintroduce captive-bred birds into their former range. The decline of the Hawaiian Crow is primarily due to habitat loss, disease, and predation by introduced species such as rats and mongooses.
